What is Amtico Flooring?
What is Amtico flooring?
Amtico is a brand of laminate flooring suitable for most areas of your property and is great for underfloor heating. It has been manufactured since 1960 by the Amtico Group. It's well established and one of the most popular floor tiles in the UK.
Amtico flooring comes in 9 designs
How long does Amtico flooring last?
Amtico can be expected to give 10-15+ years of use depending on traffic, cleaning and repairs made. In addition to regular cleaning, you should wax your Amtico flooring at least once a year.
Is Amtico flooring suitable for wet rooms?
Yes, the surface can be cleaned using hot water pressure washers. In areas of high traffic, you will need to use hard-wearing mats or carpet tiles instead of solid wood plank installations.
Does Amtico flooring have an anti-slip backing?
No. However there are many options for securing the product in place.
What is the recommended way for cleaning Amtico?
It is recommended to use an upright vacuum cleaner without a rotating head (dusting brush). Use a microfibre cloth or mop as appropriate. Never scrub/sand floors or vigorously buff them - damage may occur! The thin profile makes the boards very easy to replace if required.
Is there any special cleaning product I should use?
No, but products such as 'Jet Wash' are powerful enough to clean the surface efficiently. Never soak or pressure wash the boards (this can severely damage them). The best idea is to keep a small bucket of water and some Jet Wash in a cupboard under the stairs – it takes seconds and keeps your floors looking great!
Are There Any Special Storage Tips?
Absolutely. It's important that buyers store their Amtico flooring correctly from day one. If you are buying for an existing home, place all boxes in a room with plenty of ventilation – ideally somewhere with air conditioning – then bed down once you get to your new home.
If you are installing yourself, we'd advise you to remove the boards from their boxes as soon as you can and place them into a room that is not used very much – a spare bedroom is ideal. We don't recommend storing your vinyl flooring in sheds or garages for obvious reasons.
Can I Install Amtico Vinyl Flooring Over Other Types of Floor?
Yes, but it's important to ensure that whatever surface you're covering is suitable first. PVC tiles should be removed first and will need to be replaced before any new vinyl flooring can go down over them (solid-backed vinyl tiles may work as replacements). Any remaining glue residue must be completely removed using solvents and the sub-floor must be scrupulously clean, dry and free from any grease or oil before you start. Check that the existing surface can support Amtico vinyl flooring too – if it's concrete, for example, which cannot support a load of over 100 kg per m2. Some types of tile (quarry tiles in particular) are extremely heavy and may need to be supported independently.
Does Amtico flooring need underlay?
Yes. All Amtico flooring has a protective underlay beneath the vinyl itself which should be left intact if at all possible and will prolong the life of your flooring considerably. The underlay is designed to insulate against temperature fluctuations and sound, provide a stable base for the adhesive and seal out dirt, dust and moisture from below, reducing wear caused by these things.
We recommend using either Polyflor Permatile or Polyflor Smartseal WF35/UF35 (depending on the floor type) for all vinyl installations except heated floors - use of an underlay will not only prolong the life of your floor covering but also reduce any possible 'thump' noise caused by walking on it. It's worth noting that in terms of reducing noise, a good quality underlay is more effective than thick resilient pads which tend to absorb vibrations rather than deaden them.
How long would it take to lay Amtico Flooring?
The estimated time will be an hour per m2 once you're up to speed with the job. It will take longer at first while you get used to laying the tiles. However, using the services of an expert means you get it right the first time and save yourself from stress.
Can I lay Amtico Vinyl Flooring myself?
Amtico Polyflor vinyl flooring is very straightforward to install if you have the right equipment and a few basic skills, as well as some patience, as the job isn't without its frustrations. We always advise that you use our experts at Watford Flooring Services as we have the right equipment and expertise to get the job done the first time. You'll also be saving yourself time and money as well. How do we know? From our experience salvaging many failed DIY Amtico fitting projects.
Is Amtico flooring very expensive?
Amtico vinyl flooring is not cheap, but the quality and performance of the products will give you peace of mind, as well as many years of pleasure. If you don't need such good quality, then there are cheaper products out there that may be a better fit for your budget. The cost of Amtico will range from £20 to £85 per m² for tiles or planks - in both cases excluding VAT.
How do I choose the right Amtico design?
There are a number of factors you should consider before choosing your flooring:
Weight - This will affect how many rooms it is suitable for and whether or not you need underlay.
Specific floor type If you have an unsupported joist system – such as a timber sub-floor – TimberStrand LVT may be better suited to supporting heavier loads than standard, vinyl planks (as installed at our showroom). If you're fitting over concrete then use a VinylMax product as they are thicker with extra shock protection

What are Amtico product ranges?
There are an extensive range of Amtico products including stylish, durable vinyl designs available in contemporary as well as classic styles.
Others include Amtico Utopia for bedrooms and relaxing areas. These are ideal for their soft texture that does not tire feet during extended use. Amtico Divino boasts a mixture of rustic elegance and contemporary design. It is available in a wide range of colours for the perfect style to fit every environment.
Many Amtico products are also eco-friendly with 33% recycled content, which helps conserve natural resources and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Can Amtico be installed on stairs?
You can install Amtico with most stair nosing products. However, an expert is best suited to measure and cut the stair treads for you as this may involve some specialised tools.
The Amtico surface has a 'memory' effect which will return it to its original shape after being walked on. This reversibility means that there are no scuffs left behind by feet but you should still take care not to slide or scrape them across the floor in order to preserve this feature.
What maintenance does my new floor require?
Amtico products have been designed to be easy-care simply requiring the occasional sweeping and hoovering, then using a damp mop and warm water solution (no abrasive cleaners) to clean the floor.
Which is cheaper Amtico flooring or Karndean flooring?
The cost of an Amtico floor will vary depending on your choice of design, size and finish. Amtico is cheaper than Karndean because there are more boards per square meter in the Amtico range.
If you are looking to cover a large area with tiles then it may be cheaper to try other options less popular but higher quality varieties of Karndean tend to have less wear and last longer. There are also other cheaper alternatives such as Lino's or vinyl from most DIY stores which although they lack a 'wow' factor they are still good value for money when compared to hardwood parquet options both in terms of initial cost and ongoing upkeep.
At Watford Flooring Services, our flooring experts have been fitting Amtico flooring for both commercial and residential properties. Amtico is one of the UK's leading manufacturers of luxury vinyl flooring and carpet tiles.
